Long Term Disability Plans (LTD) - provide an income replacement benefit to ensure continued income if an Employee is unable to work for an extended period of time due to an illness or injury. In many cases the LTD plan picks up where the Short Term Disability Plan (STD) leaves off. Plans provide replacement for a portion of covered income and is paid directly to the disabled person. Generally the Employer has a choice of elimination periods and the percentage of income to be replaced. Limitations on the policies often differs substantially among insurers. The benefit is generally paid tax-free to the insured if paid for with after-tax dollars. If the Employer pays for the policy with pre-tax dollars, the disability benefits will generally be taxable.
