Short Term Disability Plans (STD) - provides income replacement coverage for the short term from accident or illness ranging from two weeks to two years. Disability from accidents may provide for 1st day coverage. Coverage may also supplement Workers' Compensation benefits for lost time due to occupational injuries or illnesses. In many plans the Employer and/or Employee has a choice of elimination periods and durations of pay. The plans may be Individually or Group based and paid for by the Employer and/or Employee. The benefits are paid tax-free if the premium is not pre-taxed under Section 125 of the IRSC.
